The theoretically annual, but in practice sporadic, journal of the society, supplemented by 4 occasional issues in the taxonomic series . In addition to publication dates being erratic so has been the size of the journal, and also due to the limitations of the production technology the physical condition (sepecially of the earlier issues) can sometimes be less perfect than other similar journals from other parts of the world, so copies may not be pristine – but any major faults will be mentioned. 9 ½ x 7 ¼

View larger image of 'The Bushman Candles'Craib & Lavranos -  The Bushman Candles
This fabulous large format book, on what hobbyists still tend to call Sarcocaulons but taxonomically are now all included in Monsonia and the title “Bushman Candles” neatly sidesteps, is based around the extensive field knowledge of the two authors. For each of the 15 species there is a full description and diagnostic features, geographic distribution and habitat preference, history, life history, autecology, conservation status and synonyms. This is supplemented by a distribution map and many colour photos in habitat. And one of the crowning glories of the book are the paintings by Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst for the Moffet 1979 Bothalia ion of the Genus Sarcocaulon which are reproduce life sized. If this wasn’t enough there are chapter on Bushman Candle Art, Reminiscences by Moffett, Ellaphie Ward-Hillhorst by Graham Duncan, Homelands by Bowen Boshier who provided his pencil drawings to show the landscape the plants grow in, Gerhard Marx on the botanical art he provided for the book, photographing in habitat by Connall Oosterbroek who provided many of the photos, and finally their culture. For me this is an exceptional book, both on the quality and range of its contents as well as presentation. Even if you are not very interested in Bushman Candles the information on Southern African habitats and the botanical art are exceptional. Those who have been waiting a long time for it to be published won’t be disappointed by the end result! 2011 13 x 10 192 pages

On heavier paper than the Cotyledon book and in a slip case. Again a magnificent Umdaus Press production. 2005 12 ¾ x 9 ¼ 156 pages

The author has set out to produce the most comprehensive guide to these plants yet produced, and whilst it doesn’t cover every known specie it includes a tremendous number of them. After a brief introduction to the area and plants, there are also brief biographies of the main personalities who discovered and made the plants better known. The vast majority of the book covers the plants by family with concise descriptions on one page and colour photos, which have come from a number of sources, on the opposite page to the text. A glossary and selected bibliography are also included. It is a substantial book and has certainly achieved its aim. 2017 10 ½ x 8 ½ 504 pages

View larger image of 'Mesembs: The Titanopsis Group'Hammer, Steven -  Mesembs: The Titanopsis Group
Many people grow some of the Mesembs, but don’t venture much beyond Lithops and Conophytums. This is a shame as there are many attractive plants which are quite amenable in cultivation. There have been books on Mesembs before, but as there are so many species they can’t cover more than a small sample of the types. There has also been limited information on their cultivation which varies with the wide range of climate conditions the plants live in, and their varying ease of adaption to cultivation in our less than ideal conditions. So this, the first in a projected series, will be welcomed by many, as it both shows what can be grown and how to cultivate them. It is well illustrated with many colour photos both in cultivation and habitat including variations and close ups of leaf textures. Plus there are a number of botanic art paintings, seed capsule drawings and distribution maps. The genera covered in this volume are Aloinopsis, Deilanthe, Didymaotus, Ihlenfeldtia, Nananthus, Prepodesma, Tanquana ,Titanopsis and Vanheerdea Appendices include reprints of historical notes on cultivation by Tischer and others by Schwantes, Nel and Hall. Written by a well known personality who has extensive knowledge of the plants both in habitat and cultivation this well produced book will be the ultimate reference on these plants and will do a lot to increase their popularity in cultivation.

View larger image of 'Southern African Wild Flowers - Jewels of the Veld'Manning & Paterson-Jones -  Southern African Wild Flowers - Jewels of the Veld
Is this the best South African plant book produced so far? OK, a contentious question as there have been many marvellous books on their equally marvellous plants, but the size, content and illustrations make it a strong contender. The country is divided in to three regions – “Land of plenty”, “Fynbos Country” and “The Thirstlands”, and each in then divided in to around 15 areas, and each region and area is described in to relation to its climate and geology, and the plants that grow there by well know botanist John Manning. And it is very well illustrated with many good colour photos from Colin Paterson Jones. 2004 12 x 11 176 pages

Whilst this well known author was going round the world looking at the trees to include in his marvellous book “Remarkable Trees of the World”, he fell in love with the Baobabs with the result that he devoted a book to just these trees. In addition to the African specie, which is probably the best known, he also saw 3 of the Madagascar species (slimmer and less craggy than the African trees) and the Australian specie (sort of mid way in form). As usual with this author, it is well written, and full of wonderful colour photos. Another interesting and attractive tree for Christmas reading. 143 pages 8 ¾ x 7 ¼ 2004

These are the marvellous two volumes from the person who knew the islands so well for forty years starting from the time before the large scale loss of habitat really took hold. Volume 1 covers the North and central Plateau areas of succulent plants, and volume 2 continues in to the southern and southwest areas. A wide variety of plants are included, many highly regarded by Cactus etc growers whilst a few of the zerophytic species may be unfamiliar but none the less fascinating. These large format volumes are sumptuously illustrated with many good colour photos, and are a delight to look at. 12 ¼ x 9 ¼ Volume 1 1995 - 343 pages, Volume 2 1998 - 385 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being "bumped" in transit. I’m afraid that I cannot guarantee that there is no minor bumping on the copies I supply, but for those books with more serious damage I have reduced the price accordingly.

View larger image of 'Succulent Compositae'Rowley, Gordon -  Succulent Compositae
This is Gordon’s attempt to popularise a group of somewhat overlooked plants, and whilst subtitled “A grower’s guide to the succulent species of Senecio & Othonna”, as you’d expect he does also cover the history and morphology of the plants in his easy going manner. The succulent species and forms are individually covered in detail and are illustrated with colour photos and the occasional reproduction of an historic print. 1994 10 ¼ x 7 ¼ 238 pages Please note that Strawberry Press books are quite heavy and vulnerable to their corners being bumped in transit. I’m afraid that I cannot guarantee that there is no minor bumping on the copies I supply, but for those books with more serious damage I have reduced the price accordingly.

View larger image of 'Tree Aloes of Africa'van Jaarsveld & Judd -  Tree Aloes of Africa
First in a planned series of books covering all the Aloe family – including Gasteria, Haworthia etc – this covers what in latest classification are now termed Aloidendron, six species of Tree Aloe, plus the closely related Kumara plicatilis - what was previously known as Aloe plicatilis. As with all Ernst van Jaarsveld books, there is much wider information than just the plants themselves. It starts with an explanation about the background to the reclassification and botany, before going in to the history of the plants discovery by early settlers and explorers until the present day. Chapters then cover their distribution and ecology, and cultivation. The species are then covered in detail with an attractive full page colour painting by Eric Judd and colour photos showing the whole plant, flowers, habitat etc. 2015 10 ½ x 8 74 pages

View larger image of 'The Southern African Plectranthus - and the art of turning shade to glade'van Jaarsveld & Thomas (illustrations) -  The Southern African Plectranthus - and the art of turning shade to glade
Following on from his first book on these plants 20 years ago, this is everything you’d hope from this well known botanist. It covers the history of their discovery and cultivation, his hunting for them in their natural habitats, garden uses in suitable climates, hybrids, distribution and ecology before going on to describe each of the 55 known and accepted SA species (and a couple of other) each illustrated with colour photos and a full page botanical illustration by Vicky Thomas. Maybe not the most popular of plants, but Fernwood Press have produced a book that will be enjoyed by many who haven’t previously been captivated by them. 2006 12 x 9 ¼ 176 pages
